| Hemingway Outfitter offers a gun appraisal service for our customers. To have
an appraisal done, please fill out the Firearms Appraisal Form (below) for each
gun, and send good quality photos of each gun to be appraised from several
angles. Be sure the photos show any engraving; the figure of the stock, grips,
and/or forearm; proof marks; and condition of bluing or case-color hardening.
PLEASE, please, please send good pictures. If I can''t see the gun, the
condition I use for the appraisal won''t be accurate. Note that we ask you for
the serial number on the form. This is because the age of the gun can often
drive its value. I get hinky about sending out the serial numbers of my guns.
If you do, too, the normal work-around is to send the serial number with the
last two digits replaced by XX. Other absolutely essential pieces of info are:
manufacturer, model, gauge or caliber of the weapon, and the length of the
barrel (or barrels). |
| |
| If any of this stuff is Greek to you or you don''t know what the heck I''m
talking about with proof marks and case-color hardening, send in the form as
complete as you can and look for my reply e-mail with questions. Please also
include any unique custom features, historical data with available
documentation (if you can prove it once belonged to Teddy Roosevelt, for
instance), or known alterations to the gun and who did them. The more
information, the better the appraisal will be. If the Colt factory did the
engraving instead of an independent engraver, for instance, it affects the
value substantially. |

| We strive to provide appraisals within three weeks of submission. Generally, we
will provide you with a value range that covers from the
insurance/replacement/retail dealer price down to the private party sale price.
Note that most dealers will offer you somewhat less for the gun as they must
hold it in inventory for a while and they must make a profit. We are not a gun
dealer, so we can offer you an unbiased appraisal and unbiased advice. We''re
pretty darn good, but with some custom firearms, accurate appraisal may be
beyond our capabilities. This is particularly true if it has some historical
documentation of celebrity ownership (Teddy Roosevelt''s gun, again). In this
case, we''ll try to direct you to a specialist, and we''ll send you back your
money. |
| |
| We''ll do appraisals for $20 per gun. If you do six guns or more, we''ll charge
you $15 per gun. If you''ve got more than 20 guns, contact us and we''ll figure
out something. The appraisal will be returned to you via e-mail, with a value
range for the gun, the estimated condition (%age system) used to come up with
the appraisal, and assuming I can dig it up in my research, date of manufacture
and current MSRP/last MSRP for discontinued models. |
